A faction of the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), led by interim Secretary-General Senator Sengezo Tshabangu, has expressed conditional support for President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s potential extension beyond 2028, contingent on the perceived benefits for the people of Zimbabwe.

Tshabangu, accompanied by a group of CCC lawmakers, recently visited President Mnangagwa’s Precabe farm in Kwekwe, Midlands province.

The visit was described by the President as a gesture of national unity. During the visit, Mnangagwa emphasized the need for a robust opposition, urging them to serve as a check on the ruling party and ensure accountability to the public.

Despite the president’s call for unity, the visit highlighted internal divisions within the CCC. Tshabangu’s efforts to rally party lawmakers for the event were met with significant resistance. Less than 20 CCC lawmakers attended, a stark contrast to the party’s 88 MPs and 27 senators. A faction led by Timba instructed its 50 MPs and 11 Senators to boycott the visit, citing strategic differences and highlighting the party’s internal fractures.
