Human rights groups in Guinea have estimated that more than 135 football fans, many of them children, were killed in a tragic crush at a stadium on Sunday.

The unverified figure significantly surpasses the official death toll of 56. The estimate was based on reports from hospitals, cemeteries, witnesses, local media, and families of victims, with over 50 individuals still missing. In response, the military government has urged caution, warning against spreading “unverified” information while investigations continue in Nzérékoré, the country’s second-largest city.

Justice Minister Yaya Kaïraba Kaba announced the launch of a judicial inquiry into the incident and stated that anyone sharing “unverified or malicious” information would face arrest and prosecution.

The deadly crush occurred after a controversial refereeing decision during the match sparked violence, prompting a police response with tear gas as fans attempted to flee.
