Two police officers stationed at ZRP Sakubva, Mduduzi Makina (39) and Elliot Gava (42), appeared in court this week facing charges of Assaulting or Resisting a Peace Officer. The incident occurred on December 11, 2024, during a Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) operation near Mutare Teachers College on the Mutare-Masvingo road.

The court heard that the officers, holding the ranks of Sergeant and Constable respectively, were on duty at a traffic roadblock when the ZACC team acted on a tip-off about corrupt activities. Under surveillance, the team witnessed some police officers soliciting and receiving bribes from motorists.

ZACC officers arrested Constable Peace Muchenje for bribery and attempted to seize a roadblock declaration book as evidence. However, Makina and Gava confronted the ZACC officials, demanding the return of the declaration book. In the altercation, they allegedly removed the car keys from the ZACC officers’ vehicle, twisted one officer’s arm, and fled the scene with the declaration book.

The accused were granted USD100 bail each and are set to appear in court again on January 10, 2025.
