Authorities in Gokwe South have expressed concern over poor waste management practices.
Speaking at a cleanup and Zero Waste Movement launch at Gokwe Centre, Gokwe South District Development Coordinator, Ms. Netsai Mushauri noted that waste from homes, markets, businesses, and institutions is often dumped indiscriminately in streets, storm drains, and open spaces, with some even resorting to burning waste in the open.
“Not only does this make our environment unsightly and unattractive to tourists and investors, but it also leads to flooding, air and water pollution, and various health issues,” Ms. Mushauri warned.
She stressed the urgent need for sustainable integrated solid waste management systems that can create green jobs and address the growing waste crisis. She called on local authorities to take proactive measures in tackling waste management challenges to prevent further damage to the environment and public health.
