President Emerson Mnangagwa has issued a stern warning to those involved in corruption, assuring that the government will soon take action against perpetrators.

His comments come in response to a question from a news editor, who had referred to the government as a “barking dog” that does not bite when it comes to tackling corruption.

In his response, the President stated, “The dog that barks will soon bite,” signaling a commitment to addressing corruption more aggressively in the near future.

Despite the President’s declaration, the issue of corruption remains a pressing concern in Zimbabwe. The country has struggled with high levels of public sector corruption, as reflected by its rankings on the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) published by Transparency International.

According to the most recent CPI data, Zimbabwe ranked 158th out of 180 countries in 2024, scoring 21 out of 100. This indicates a widespread perception of corruption in the public sector. While the country showed a slight improvement in 2023, scoring 24 out of 100 and ranking 149th, corruption continues to be a major challenge, with Zimbabwe remaining among the most corrupt nations globally.
