The Deputy President of the Zimbabwe National Council of Chiefs, Chief Fortune Charumbira, has announced that the Gukurahundi Outreach Programme will start on 26 June 2025. The programme, endorsed by the President, invites individuals affected by the Gukurahundi period to submit their grievances through their local chiefs.
Chief Charumbira said victims — including individuals, families, groups, or foreign nationals — can report their experiences to the chiefs in their respective areas. The process aims to collect information on losses or harm suffered during the period.
According to Chief Charumbira, the National Council of Chiefs has been preparing for over four years to engage with communities, and an awareness campaign was launched on 27 May 2025 to inform people about the programme and encourage submissions.
He added that where cases are deemed legitimate, the government may consider compensation.
The outreach is described as a victim-centered process, with chiefs tasked with identifying and documenting those affected.
