Shurugwi South Member of Parliament, Wilson Mhuri, has called on motorists and miners in the Great Dyke region to exercise caution and avoid speeding on the recently refurbished Shurugwi-Mhandamabwe Road.
Speaking to Great Dyke News, Mhuri commended the government for its efforts in upgrading the road, which is nearing completion.
“We are grateful to the government for refurbishing this vital road, which will enhance connectivity and boost economic activities in our region,” he said.
The Shurugwi-Mhandamabwe Road project, a key infrastructure initiative under the Second Republic, has seen significant progress, with over 30 kilometers of the 43-kilometer stretch completed. The project is being executed in partnership with Road Trackers Construction (RTC), a local company, under a US$41 million contract that includes road widening and upgrading.
The road is a critical economic artery linking Beitbridge Border Post to major towns such as Gweru, Kwekwe, and Chinhoyi. Its refurbishment is expected to boost cargo movement, improve travel efficiency, and stimulate growth in the Midlands Province’s GDP.
Beyond its regional significance, the Shurugwi-Mhandamabwe Road plays a strategic role in national trade, connecting key border posts and facilitating commerce. The government’s broader infrastructure development agenda prioritizes upgrading transport networks to support productivity and sustainable economic growth.
