Shurugwi South Member of Parliament, Wilson Mhuri, has called for a multi-stakeholder approach to address the urgent need for repairs on the Boterekwa Escarpment road. The appeal comes as the district awaits long-term refurbishment plans currently under consideration by the government.

Speaking to Great Dyke News, Mhuri, a qualified surveyor and road construction expert, emphasized the necessity of short-term interventions to ensure the safety of motorists and residents.

“The road is included in the government’s plans for refurbishment, but immediate measures are crucial to address the current state of disrepair,” Mhuri said.

Engineers from the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development recently assessed the road and are expected to provide feedback on possible solutions.

The urgency of the situation was underscored yesterday when residents and motorists encountered a gaping hole along the Zvishavane-Shurugwi highway, heightening safety concerns.

The mineral-rich region, known for extensive mining activities ranging from large-scale operations to artisanal and illegal mining, has long faced challenges with road infrastructure due to underground mining-related subsidence.

Authorities and stakeholders are now being urged to collaborate in finding immediate and lasting solutions to maintain the critical highway.
