The head of the Civil Protection Unit (CPU), Nathan Nkomo, has urged the Ministry of Finance to allocate $250 million USD to the CPU, emphasizing the need for these funds to safeguard lives and address potential challenges that could arise from Tropical Cyclone Chido.

The Meteorological Services Department of Zimbabwe has announced that Tropical Cyclone Chido is expected to reach Zimbabwe next week.

Speaking before members of the National Civil Protection Committee, Nkomo stated that while there are many pressing financial needs, it is crucial for the CPU to receive funding now to protect lives.

He added that even if the full amount is not provided, a portion of the requested funds would still go a long way in addressing the challenges brought by cyclones.

Nkomo said his department is prepared to carry out its duties effectively in all areas expected to be affected by Tropical Cyclone Chido next week.

He noted that the Cabinet has approved their Multi-Hazard Contingency Plan, and now, the only missing piece is the required funding.
