Sudan’s military has launched a major offensive targeting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), aiming to regain control of areas in the capital Khartoum lost at the start of the civil war. Early Thursday, government forces shelled RSF positions in Khartoum and Bahri, marking a significant push by the army since the conflict began in April 2023.
The fighting has caused a humanitarian crisis, with the UN estimating 150,000 deaths and over 10 million displaced. Despite US-led ceasefire talks at the UN General Assembly, the clashes continue. Reports indicate artillery fire and airstrikes, with both sides accused of bombing civilian areas. The UN has called for urgent action, highlighting widespread hunger, a cholera epidemic, and fears of genocide in Darfur.
Efforts to provide aid remain hindered by the conflict.
