Tanzanian police are investigating a viral video allegedly showing five men gang-raping a young woman, causing widespread outrage in the country. Authorities have not confirmed if the suspects are soldiers but stated that investigations are “progressing well” without verifying any arrests.

Contrary to rumors, police confirmed that the victim is alive, calling reports of her death “falsehoods.” They urged the public not to share the video to protect the victim and her family.

The video, which surfaced online on Sunday, shocked the conservative society of Tanzania, highlighting the nation’s struggle with rising gender-based violence. The victim is reportedly from Yombo Dovya, a suburb of Dar es Salaam.

Police have appealed for calm as investigations continue, promising detailed information once legal procedures are complete. Human rights groups and social media users demand swift action, with the Legal and Human Rights Centre warning that inaction could lead to more such incidents. The Tanganyika Law Society condemned the attack as a “gross violation of laws and societal norms.”

Home Affairs Minister Hamad Masauni mentioned that the suspects are already under arrest but provided no further details.
