The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in Midlands Province have confirmed a sudden death case in which a 19-year-old man died after being run over by a train in Mberengwa.

Midlands Provincial Community Relations Liaison Officer Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the incident occurred on 5 March 2026 at around 0245 hours along a railway line near the 86-kilometre peg between Poland and Ngezi.

The deceased has been identified as Author Nkiwani (19) of Village Chatira under Chief Mataruse in Mberengwa.

According to police, Donald Tachiona (41) was operating a goods train travelling from Rutenga to Somabhula when he noticed Nkiwani lying face down across the railway line.

Inspector Mahoko said the train driver sounded the locomotive horn in an attempt to alert the young man, but he did not respond.

“The driver tried to warn him by sounding the horn, but the now deceased did not move from the railway line,” said Mahoko.

The train failed to stop in time and ran over the victim, resulting in fatal injuries.

Police are urging members of the public to avoid sitting or lying on railway lines, warning that trains cannot stop quickly once they are in motion.

Authorities also cautioned against resorting to suicide when facing life challenges, emphasizing that there are other ways to seek help and resolve problems.
