As Zimbabwe enters the rainy season, the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development, led by Minister Winston Chitando, has issued a strong call to mining companies across the country to intensify their safety protocols and environmental protections.
In a media briefing aimed at ensuring sustainable and safe mining operations during the challenging weather period, Minister Chitando highlighted the increased risks posed by adverse weather conditions such as landslides, flooding, and equipment malfunctions.
“We have observed a spike in mining-related accidents during the rainy season in recent years,” said Chitando. “It is crucial for mining operations to adopt a proactive approach to prevent accidents and safeguard the lives of their workers.”
The Minister emphasized the importance of conducting thorough risk assessments and implementing robust safety measures to protect workers. He pointed out that mining activities during heavy rains can lead to significant environmental impacts, including soil erosion and water contamination. To mitigate these risks, Chitando urged all mining operations to revisit their Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and ensure compliance with the highest standards of environmental stewardship.
Key measures outlined by the Minister for mining companies to implement include regular site inspections, the development of emergency preparedness plans, and employee training on safety protocols specific to rainy conditions.
“Safety is not an event but a continuous process,” Chitando stressed. “Mining companies must ensure that their employees are constantly reviewing and retraining on safety procedures tailored to the season.”
In addition, Chitando called for adaptive measures based on weather forecasts, such as adjusting work schedules, maintaining machinery to cope with wet conditions, and collaborating closely with local authorities for timely updates on potential hazards.
“The rainy season brings unique challenges, but we can and should ensure zero harm,” he said. “Our goal is to achieve production targets without compromising the safety of workers or the environment.”
The mining sector is a critical component of Zimbabwe’s economy, accounting for over 70% of the country’s foreign currency earnings. Ensuring its safe and sustainable operation during the rainy season remains a top priority for the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development.
