Three officers from the Zimbabwe Republic Police, stationed at CID Chiredzi, are facing serious assault charges after allegedly brutalizing a suspect during an investigation.

Valentine Dhliwayo (40), James Chiduwo (43), and Isaac Musungati (34) appeared before the Chiredzi Magistrates’ Court on Monday. The State alleges that on the night of January 14, 2023, around 8:30 PM, the officers stormed into the complainant’s home in Tshovani, Chiredzi, while investigating a case of unlawful entry and theft involving a missing laptop and USD 10,000.

When their search turned up empty, the officers reportedly escalated matters, dragging the suspect to the CID Chiredzi office. There, the situation took a violent turn. The complainant, now nursing a fractured leg, claims the officers subjected him to a severe beating in a bid to extract information.

The accused officers have been remanded until August 30, 2024, when the trial will continue.
