The latest controversy surrounding the Gweru Derby between Chapungu FC and Sheasham FC has once again shone a glaring spotlight on the perennial issue of match officiating in Zimbabwe’s football leagues. The frustration voiced by Chapungu supporters over a seemingly blatant handball in Sheasham’s penalty box being overlooked by referee Tawanda Mashindi and his assistant referees, John Tanyanyiwa and Major Mususa, raises serious concerns about the integrity and competence of match officials in the Central Region Soccer League.

While it’s true that humans make mistakes, the critical question is how three officials can collectively miss a handball so obvious that over a thousand spectators could see it from a distance. If this was a one-off incident, we might chalk it up to a moment of poor judgment. However, the consistency with which such contentious decisions seem to crop up begs a deeper examination into the standards—or lack thereof—of refereeing in our leagues. Are we witnessing mere incompetence, or is there a darker element of corruption tainting the beautiful game?

For any football club, the investment of time, money, and resources is driven by the pursuit of success. But what happens when the playing field is tilted not by the skill of opponents but by the apparent failings of those entrusted to enforce the rules? Will teams continue to pour in resources if they feel the outcomes of their matches are not determined fairly on the pitch? The ongoing scenario not only demotivates the players and management but also erodes fan confidence, ultimately harming the growth of football in Zimbabwe.

The Question of Corruption: Should ZACC Step In?

Given the stakes involved, it might be time for the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) to take a closer look at the Central Region Soccer League’s referees. If there are suspicions of corruption, ZACC could employ lie detector tests to ascertain whether match-fixing or bribery is at play. Ensuring clean and honest officiating isn’t just about maintaining the sport’s integrity; it’s about restoring trust among clubs, players, and the fans who are the lifeblood of football.
