Ugandan marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei, who competed in the recent Paris Olympics, is in critical condition after being set on fire by a former boyfriend in Endebess, Kenya. Cheptegei and the alleged attacker, both with severe burns, are receiving treatment at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret.
Police report that the incident followed a quarrel outside Cheptegei’s home, linked to a land dispute.
Cheptegei’s father is seeking justice, while authorities continue their investigation.
This attack highlights the rising violence against female athletes in Kenya, with previous cases including the murders of runners Agnes Tirop and Damaris Mutua by their partners.
