Wildlife Woes: Nyanga Man Caught Red-Handed with Game Meat, Pays the Price!

A 31-year-old man from Nyamhuka 2, Nyanga, Simbarashe Nyatondo, has been fined for contravening the country’s Parks and Wildlife Act. Nyatondo appeared before the Nyanga Magistrates’ Court after being caught in possession of illegally obtained game meat.

The incident occurred on April 11, 2024, when a Wildlife Officer from Nyanga National Park received a tip-off that Nyatondo was in possession of game meat at his residence. Acting on the information, the officer alerted police, who then searched the premises. The authorities discovered 8.8kg of game meat stored in a refrigerator, later identified as belonging to a common duiker, a species valued at USD 1,000.

Following his trial, Nyatondo was sentenced to pay a fine of USD 120 or face 30 days of imprisonment. In addition, the court ordered him to compensate Nyanga National Park by paying USD 1,000 for the illegal hunting and possession of the animal.
