ZESA Executive Chairman, Dr. Sydney Gata, has attributed the ongoing power shortages in Zimbabwe to a combination of long-term underinvestment due to sanctions and severe hydrological challenges.

Speaking at a press conference, Dr. Gata highlighted that for the past 25 years, the country has struggled to secure the necessary investments to bolster its electricity infrastructure.

He said additionally, the diminished water levels at Kariba Dam, a crucial source of hydroelectric power, have significantly reduced energy output, contributing to the current load shedding crisis.

Zimbabwe is currently experiencing increased load-shedding due to a technical fault at Hwange Power Stationā€™s Unit 8. This has led to extended power outages across the country as the national power utility, ZESA, works to balance electricity supply and demand.

The situation had briefly improved during the recent SADC summit, but the fault at Hwange has caused a return to more frequent load-shedding. ZESA is actively working to resolve the issue and restore more stable power supply.
