Zimbabweans Urged to Buy Local This Festive Season.

The chairman of Merjkh Holdings , Munyaradzi Hwengwere, has urged Zimbabweans to prioritize buying locally produced goods this festive season as a critical step toward economic empowerment and national development.

Speaking on the current economic challenges, Hwengwere highlighted the mixed fortunes faced by various sectors this year. While gold mining saw some stability, agriculture suffered a devastating blow from the El Niño-induced drought, resulting in one of the lowest maize production levels in decades.

The climate crisis has also brought record-high temperatures and severe weather conditions, further straining the nation’s economy.

Despite these adversities, Hwengwere emphasized the potential for economic recovery through conscious consumer choices. “When you go into a shop, what do you choose? Is it just the price of a product, or is it an investment in your future?” he questioned, urging Zimbabweans to look beyond short-term affordability and consider the long-term impact of their spending.

Hwengwere noted that buying local products strengthens industries, preserves jobs, and reduces reliance on imports. He encouraged consumers to identify and prioritize products with the “Buy Zimbabwe” label, stating, “It’s easy. Look at the product with a Buy Zimbabwe sign and buy that.”

Drawing comparisons with global markets, he pointed out how nations like the United States protect local industries through policies and consumer habits that favor domestic products. He called on Zimbabweans to adopt a similar mindset, warning that neglecting local industries leads to economic stagnation and increased poverty.

The chairman’s remarks come against the backdrop of rising emigration, with 35,000 Zimbabweans reported to have left for Europe this year alone. Hwengwere expressed concern over this brain drain and its impact on national development, reiterating that economic revitalization starts with individual efforts to support local production.

As Zimbabweans prepare for the festive season, Hwengwere’s appeal underscores the importance of aligning consumer habits with the broader vision of economic growth and self-reliance. By choosing local, he argued, citizens can help build a stronger economy and ensure a brighter future for the next generation.
