The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) has partnered with local content advocacy organisation Buy Zimbabwe in a renewed push to combat smuggling and strengthen protection for domestic industries and consumers.

The collaboration, confirmed in an official letter dated 19 February 2026, seeks to curb the growing influx of smuggled goods into the country while addressing the circulation of counterfeit products that undermine both businesses and public safety.

Buy Zimbabwe Advocacy Officer Elvis Masvaure said the partnership represents an important step toward restoring fairness in the marketplace.

“The goal is not only to stop smuggling of goods but also to ensure that the local market is free from counterfeit products,” Masvaure said, adding that coordinated action with Zimra will help shield local manufacturers from unfair and unethical trading practices.

Zimra Commissioner of Customs and Excises, Batsirai Chadzingwa, outlined the scale of the challenge, noting that commonly smuggled items include fuel, alcohol, energy drinks, footwear, detergents, meat products, confectionery, washing powder, clothing and various grocery items.

Authorities estimate Zimbabwe loses nearly US$1 billion annually due to smuggling — a situation that continues to strain government revenue while placing legitimate businesses at a competitive disadvantage.

Through the joint initiative, Zimra and Buy Zimbabwe aim to strengthen enforcement measures, promote compliance, and encourage consumers to support locally produced goods. Stakeholders say the partnership is expected to contribute to a more stable and competitive economic environment while boosting confidence in Zimbabwean products.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts to promote local industry growth and ensure a safer, more regulated marketplace for consumers nationwide
