ZRP Cracks Down on Vehicles Without Registration Plates.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a stern warning regarding vehicles operating without permanent registration plates, citing concerns for road safety and law enforcement.

In a press statement released on September 18, 2024, the ZRP emphasized that vehicles lacking permanent registration plates cannot be legally licensed or insured. According to the Vehicle Registration and Licensing Act (Chapter 13:14), vehicles must have a change of ownership processed within two weeks and be properly licensed before they can be driven. Unlicensed and uninsured vehicles pose significant risks, as they cannot be held accountable in the event of accidents, leaving victims without legal recourse.
The ZRP noted a troubling trend where vehicles without registration plates are being used in criminal activities, including armed robberies and illegal taxi services (mushikashika). Such vehicles are difficult to trace and often evade law enforcement.

In response, the ZRP has intensified efforts to enforce registration plate regulations. Vehicles found on the roads without proper registration plates will be impounded and will only be released once they are fitted with the necessary plates. This directive also applies to vehicles with temporary plates.

The Central Vehicle Registry has assured that there is an adequate supply of registration plates, leaving no excuse for non-compliance. Motorists are urged to ensure their vehicles are registered and fitted with permanent plates to avoid legal issues and contribute to road safety.
