Zvishavane District Development Coordinator Darlington Chokera has urged residents and businesses in the district to embrace the local currency, following the announcement that new Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) banknotes will begin circulating next month.
Speaking to stakeholders in the district, Chokera said the success and stability of any national currency depend largely on the confidence and support of the people who use it.
“The currency stabilises and strengthens when it is embraced and supported by the local population,” he said, encouraging residents to adopt the ZiG for everyday transactions.
The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) recently announced that a new series of ZiG banknotes will enter circulation on 7 April 2026, beginning with the ZiG10, ZiG20 and ZiG50 denominations, while ZiG100 and ZiG200 notes will be introduced later.
According to the central bank, the new notes are not a new currency, but an upgrade of the existing ZiG banknotes introduced in April 2024, featuring improved design and enhanced security features.
The redesigned notes will also circulate alongside the existing ZiG notes already in use, allowing a gradual transition as older notes are returned to banks and replaced.
Zimbabwe introduced the gold-backed ZiG currency in 2024 as part of efforts to stabilise the country’s monetary system after years of currency volatility.
Chokera said wider use of the local currency at community level will help strengthen the economy and support national efforts to stabilise the financial system.
