Zimbabwe Republic Police Zvishavane district has with immediate effect banned the carrying of dangerous weapons such as machetes, axes, and knives that can be used in the commission of crimes.
The prohibition order will run from the 14th of January to 14 April 2020.
Machete gangs’ have wreaked havoc at gold mining sites across the country, causing deaths and injuries and threatening the entire gold mining industry. The brazen criminals have even moved into rural business centres, cities, and towns where they carry out their violent activities.
Speaking on behalf of ZRP Zvishavane District Chief Superintendent Albert Ncube, assistant inspector Respect Manyuchi said the move is expected to reduce weapon-related crimes such as assault and murder that have become rampant in mining areas.
Meanwhile, ZRP Midlands spokesperson Inspector Joel Goko revealed that they had arrested 39 machete-wielding criminals who stormed Gokwe North police base intending to free their arrested colleagues.
