Thirteen foreign peacekeepers, including nine South Africans, three Malawians, and a Uruguayan, have been killed in clashes with M23 rebels near Goma, eastern DR Congo. The fighting has intensified as the rebels push towards the city.
The UN is evacuating non-essential staff, and global leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, have called for an end to the violence. The M23, accused of being backed by Rwanda, has seized key towns, displacing over 400,000 people this year.
The conflict, rooted in regional tensions and control over mineral-rich territories, continues to worsen the humanitarian crisis.
