Gweru has a rich history that dates back to the pre-colonial era. The city was originally known as “Gwelo” and was a major centre for trade and commerce in the region.

Today, Gweru still retains much of its historical and cultural heritage, with several sites of interest for visitors.

One such site is the Gweru Military Museum, which houses a collection of military equipment, artifacts and exhibits showcasing the history and culture of the region.

Visitors can learn about the traditional lifestyles of the local communities, as well as the colonial and post-colonial history of Zimbabwe.

Another notable site in Gweru is the Antelope Park, a wildlife conservation centre that gives visitors an opportunity to witness the spectacular beauty of African wildlife up close.

The park is home to several species of animals, including lions, elephants, zebras, and giraffes.

Visitors can take part in a range of activities, from guided safari tours to horseback riding and bird watching.

Gweru is also located in close proximity to one of the most significant geological features in Zimbabwe, the Great Dyke.

The Great Dyke is a massive, long, and narrow geological formation that stretches for over 500 kilometers across Zimbabwe, from north to south.

The dyke is an important source of precious metals, including platinum and chromium, and has played a significant role in the country’s economy.

Every year a regional radio station YAFM hosts Tour De Great Dyke, a cycling event exploring the geological formation and mining potential of the region.

The tour provides a unique opportunity to witness the geological wonders of Zimbabwe, while also gaining an understanding of the country’s natural resources and economic development.

it is also home to three radio stations including YAFM which set up an office in the city this year.

To celebrate all this, Buy Zimbabwe has partnered MEJRKH Communications to host the Great Dyke Awards a highly anticipated annual event that recognizes outstanding achievements in various sectors in the 550km stretch along the Great Dyke Region, that includes mining, agriculture, tourism and the manufacturing industry on the 16th of June 2023 in Gweru.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa is the invited Guest of Honour.
