The price of the AK-47 assault rifle has dropped by 50% in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, due to a flooded black market.
The influx of Russian-made Kalashnikov rifles, colloquially known as “the Clash,” flooded the market as Sudan descended into civil war in April. Battles between the army and paramilitary forces rage daily in the streets.
A longtime arms dealer noted the supply-demand shift after a significant battle, allowing dealers to source weapons locally rather than relying on smuggling routes.
Some residents, concerned about safety amidst the conflict, have turned to these dealers, purchasing AK-47s for self-defense.
