Elias Munkuli (35) has been sentenced to 12 months in prison by the Hwange Magistrates’ Court for violating the Trapping of Animals Control Act. Munkuli was caught setting class one wire snares to trap animals, a serious offense under Zimbabwean law.
On July 30, 2024, Munkuli and an accomplice, who remains at large, were intercepted by Game Rangers while on patrol. Munkuli, accompanied by five dogs, attempted to flee but was apprehended. The accomplice managed to escape. Authorities recovered a kudu carcass valued at USD 3,000, two spears, and 23 wire snares from Munkuli.
The court sentenced Munkuli to 12 months imprisonment, with 4 months suspended for 5 years, meaning he will serve an effective 8 months. This case underscores the National Prosecuting Authority’s commitment to combating wildlife crimes and protecting Zimbabwe’s fauna and flora.
