RBZ Advisor Clarifies Deputy Governor’s Comments on Remittances in ZiG Currency.

RBZ advisor Persistence Gwanyanya has sought to clarify remarks made by Deputy Governor William Mamhimanzi at the Inaugural Capital Market Conference, suggesting that the Central Bank is exploring options for individuals to voluntarily choose to receive remittances in Zimbabwe’s local currency, the ZiG. 

Gwanyanya emphasized that the Deputy Governor’s intent was to create a scenario where people might willingly opt for ZiGs, rather than enforcing it.

This comes in response to concerns that Mamhimanzi comments could echo past policies under former RBZ governor Gideon Gono, which led to problems as people sought alternative methods to send money due to the weakening national dollar.
