Lovemore Madhuku, leader of Zimbabwe’s National Constitutional Assembly (NCA), has called for national unity as Zimbabwe takes on the chairmanship of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

Speaking on the sidelines of the Summit, Madhuku emphasized that the significance of this leadership role transcends political divides and is a moment of national pride that should unite all Zimbabweans.

“We are attending here to demonstrate that there is a point in time in the life of any country where people have to work together,” Madhuku stated. He stressed that while internal disagreements may exist, the opportunity to lead the SADC is about the nation as a whole, not the current government or its president. “Whatever problems we might have in the nation; those don’t count when it comes to a moment of celebrating that recognition in the nation.”

Madhuku highlighted the tangible benefits that ordinary citizens can gain from Zimbabwe’s leadership within the regional bloc, particularly through strengthened relationships with neighboring countries. “We live in a community of other nations,” he said, pointing out that Zimbabwe’s ability to export, import, and secure resources like electricity is heavily dependent on its regional ties.
