Platinum miner, Mimosa is placing fitness at the heart of its employee wellness program, emphasizing the role of physical activity in improving health, reducing chronic illness, and enhancing productivity. Last week, the mine held its annual Sports and Fun Day, bringing together employees, suppliers, families, and stakeholders for a day filled with sports and camaraderie.

The event is part of a broader wellness initiative that includes a weight management program, encouraging employees to maintain fitness through various sports activities. Dr. Tonderai Kwari, who oversees the wellness program, highlighted that over 20 sporting disciplines are available to staff, reflecting the company’s commitment to long-term employee well-being.

“This isn’t just a one-off event; it’s part of an ongoing wellness journey,” said Dr. Kwari. “Every Wednesday afternoon, we allocate time for employees to engage in sports, and many continue participating on weekends. This initiative unites everyone through physical activity, promoting health and teamwork.”

The company’s focus on fitness also aligns with efforts to combat obesity and chronic diseases, which have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and recent Mpox outbreaks.

Mimosa’s wellness program extends beyond internal events, with employees actively participating in external competitions, such as the Tour De Great Dyke. “We have a competitive cycling team preparing for this 350-kilometer race. Staying fit is crucial for this challenge, and we encourage employees to cycle during their free time,” Dr. Kwari explained.

By fostering fitness, Mimosa aims to reduce absenteeism, mitigate chronic diseases, and boost productivity. “Wellness activities benefit both the individual and the company,” Dr. Kwari emphasized. “When employees are healthy, they’re more productive, which directly contributes to profitability and operational efficiency.”
