The National Blood Services Zimbabwe (NBSZ), has launched a campaign to encourage Zimbabweans to donate blood as the country approaches the Christmas and New Year holidays.

Speaking to journalists during the launch of the campaign, NBSZ Chief Executive Officer Lucy Marowa stated that their current blood stocks are critically low, raising concerns over a potential crisis if demand increases.

“Right now, we have blood types A, B, and AB that can last up to a week, but Type O blood is extremely scarce and may not even last a single day,” said Marowa.

The NBSZ is urging people aged between 16 and 60, weighing at least 50 kilograms, and in good health, to donate blood voluntarily.

Approximately 50% of Zimbabweans are reported to have Type O blood, and according to health experts, the NBSZ requires 2,737.88 units of this blood type every month.
