Harare Province Chairman of the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) Godwills Masimirembwa has claimed that the postponement of general elections to 2030 does not require a national referendum.
Masimirembwa, a lawyer argued that there is no constitutional necessity for a referendum to extend the country’s electoral timeline, as proposed by some factions within the ruling party.
His remarks came in the wake of mounting calls for electoral reforms and a potential delay in the upcoming 2025 elections, citing the need for more time to stabilize the political landscape.
“Postponing the elections to 2030 is a matter that falls within the jurisdiction of Parliament and the President, and it does not necessarily require a referendum,” said Masimirembwa.
“The Constitution allows for the adjustment of election timelines in exceptional circumstances, and this is one such instance where the national interest must take precedence.”
