Zimbabwe’s senior men’s rugby team, the Sables, clinched the prestigious Team of the Year title at the 2025 Annual National Sports Awards (ANSA), celebrated in Harare over the weekend. This accolade honours a year marked by outstanding performance, dedication, and a surge of national pride as the Sables continue to make their mark on both continental and international rugby arenas.

Following a remarkable 2024 season characterized by impressive victories, including two Africa Cup titles and a rise to the 28th spot in the World Rugby Rankings—Zimbabwe’s highest position in a decade—the Sables’ achievements were celebrated by the sports community. This moment signified a win not only for rugby but also for the broader sphere of Zimbabwean athletics.

Team captain Hilton Mudariki, who skilfully guided the squad throughout the year, expressed his joy at receiving this honour: “Winning Team of the Year is a special feeling. It truly reflects the hard work put in by the team throughout 2024.”

Vice Captain Aiden Bennet, another key player in the team’s success, added: “I’m incredibly proud and honoured by this achievement. I’m looking forward to what lies ahead in the coming year.”

For Brian Makamure, a two-time Africa Cup champion, the recognition was particularly rewarding: “It’s fantastic to be up here again and to see our team receive the acknowledgment we deserve. Onward to even greater challenges!”

Kudzai Mashawi, the other Vice Captain, shared his thoughts on the significance of the award for both the team and the nation: “It’s an honour to be recognized for representing our country.”

The Sables’ outstanding journey has been fuelled not only by skill but also by precise planning and strategic management. Head Coach Pieter Benade, the mastermind behind the team’s tactical approach, expressed gratitude for the recognition: “It’s incredible for our efforts to be acknowledged and our accomplishments celebrated. Moving forward, we have a significant task ahead to ensure another memorable year that all Zimbabwean sports fans can take pride in.”

Team Manager, Takunda Chifokoyo emphasized the award’s importance: “What an amazing achievement! Being recognized by the larger sports community speaks volumes about the hard work these players have put in. We are truly honoured to be named Team of the Year and are excited to make our nation proud again in 2025.”

The Sables’ triumph at the ANSA Awards not only validates their past work but also ignites enthusiasm for the future. With a devoted fan base rallying behind them and a clear vision ahead, Zimbabwe’s national rugby team is setting an inspiring example for aspiring athletes nationwide.

The Sables celebrate their victory as they prepare for key international competitions, including Rugby Africa tournaments and the World Cup qualification series, the Team of the Year title will serve as both an honour and a motivation to continue achieving excellence.
