Delta Corporation says it is encouraged by this year’s agricultural outcome, highlighting improved maize output compared to last season.
Speaking recently, Finance Director Alex Makamure said late plantings in communal areas had contributed positively, resulting in a stronger crop.
“We are encouraged by the agricultural outcome this year. Whilst we don’t believe that Zimbabwe achieved 2.5 million tonnes of maize, a number between one million and 2.5 million seems correct,” he said.
His remarks come as the government moves to strengthen food sovereignty by compelling major processors — including National Foods, Delta and cooking oil producers — to source their maize from local farmers. The new law follows last week’s ban on maize imports, introduced after authorities projected a harvest of 2.3 million tonnes, enough to meet national demand.
Officials say the measures will support local farmers, reduce reliance on imports, and ensure greater stability in the grain supply chain.
