Zvishavane’s mining sector has welcomed the newly commissioned Midlands Park Housing Development and Student Accommodation Scheme, describing it as one of the best models of housing delivery in the country.

Small-scale miner, Sam Ncube, told Great Dyke News that the facilities unveiled by President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the First Lady, Amai Auxillia Mnangagwa, were “possibly the best in the country,” adding that he was inviting people to come through and secure accommodation at the new development.

His remarks were echoed by Sabi Gold Mine’s Human Resources Manager, Edmore Masiko, who said the project was timely and commendable. “The development is quite welcome and the mine is happy that good accommodation has become readily available in Zvishavane for staff and families as well as students,” he said.

The Midlands Park project, spearheaded by the Public Service Pension Fund (PSPF) in partnership with First Mutual, provides modern residential flats and student accommodation. Over 700 students are expected to benefit from the facilities, which align with the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) Infrastructure and Utilities component.

At the official opening ceremony, President Mnangagwa cut the ribbon and unveiled a plaque to mark the launch of the scheme. He and the First Lady also planted a Terminalia sericea (mususu) tree at the park as part of the commemorations.

The development adds to a growing list of real estate projects being delivered through pension funds, with the aim of addressing the country’s housing needs while promoting socio-economic growth.

Earlier in the day, the President and the First Lady arrived at the park to a warm reception before touring the new facilities. After the commissioning, the President was scheduled to preside over the Munhumutapa Day commemorations in Zvishavane, which coincided with his 83rd birthday celebrations.
