In a devastating incident on Sunday, a mine collapse in Kwekwe trapped two individuals underground, sparking a desperate rescue operation. Led by Mr. Reason Machina of the Kwekwe District Civil Protection Unit, the rescue teams have faced formidable challenges in their tireless efforts to reach the trapped miners.

The collapse was immediately reported, prompting swift action from the rescue team. However, their attempts have proven futile, with challenging conditions hindering progress. Mining giant Kuvimba Mining House has contributed an excavator to aid in the operation.

Mr. Machina expressed his concerns, stating that since Sunday, the chances of finding survivors are slim. The primary goal now is to ascertain the number of individuals who were underground during the disaster.

This tragic incident adds to the prevalent issue of collapses in Zimbabwe’s artisanal and small-scale mines. While there is heightened concern during the rainy season, accidents occur throughout the year. Disused mines pose a particular risk, often lacking safety measures, plans, or oversight.

In 2019, Zimbabwe recorded 116 accidents with 182 fatalities. In 2021, there was a decrease, with 121 accidents and 139 fatalities. As of September 30, 2022, the country had recorded 125 accidents and 139 fatalities. Some incidents go unreported, especially in remote areas. The ongoing challenges underscore the urgent need for enhanced safety measures in the mining sector.
