Mimosa Mining Company Managing Director Fungai Makoni has praised the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) for their dedication to service, saying the mine’s long-running support for law enforcement reflects its commitment to building excellence within the community.
Makoni was speaking at the 2025 Zvishavane District Cop of the Year Awards, where Detective Gapare was crowned the district’s top officer for outstanding performance. Makoni said the initiative to recognize exceptional policing was an extension of Mimosa’s internal philosophy of nurturing talent, rewarding excellence, and strengthening commitment.
“This initiative aligns with our mission to build capability and recognize superior performance,” he said. “By extending this programme to the ZRP, we aim to foster a culture of excellence and inspire officers to innovate and remain dedicated in executing their duties.”
Makoni highlighted the mine’s Let’s Go Zero initiative, which includes partnerships with the ZRP and the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe during public holidays to promote safer roads and reduce accidents.
He also commended the police for their role in fighting the country’s growing drug and substance abuse crisis.
“We advocate for zero tolerance on drug and substance abuse. The ZRP plays a critical role in apprehending drug dealers and protecting our communities, particularly our youth,” he said.
The event coincided with Mimosa’s centenary celebrations, marking 100 years of mining operations.
Makoni said the milestone was a reminder of the partnerships that have sustained the mine over the decades.
“As we celebrate 100 years of mining, it is only fitting that we gather with those who have helped build this enduring legacy. Our success depends on our community, and we are deeply grateful for the support and collaboration we continue to receive,” he said.
He described the Mimosa journey as one built on resilience, adaptation and strong relationships with local institutions such as the police.
Detective Gapare received the district’s top policing award for 2025, earning recognition for professionalism, dedication and exceptional investigative work.
The Cop of the Year Awards — sponsored by Mimosa for nearly two decades — honour officers who excel in crime prevention, investigation and community service.
