Guruve, Mashonaland Central — Eureka Gold Mine has invested US$2.3 million in wide-ranging corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives in Guruve District, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable development, community wellbeing and responsible mining.
The Victoria Falls Stock Exchange–listed gold producer, which is wholly Zimbabwean-owned, says its CSR programme is guided by four key pillars: community development, environment, health and sanitation, and education.
Speaking this week, Eureka Gold Mine General Manager Nelson Banda said the company recognises that it does not operate in isolation and is determined to leave a lasting legacy in the communities surrounding its operations.
“We appreciate that we are part of the Guruve community. As we mine, we must also invest back into the people and ensure that livelihoods are improved in a sustainable manner,” Banda said.
Responsible Relocations and Modern Infrastructure
A significant portion of the US$2.3 million has gone towards responsible community relocations necessitated by mine expansion. Families from villages such as Mazhambe and Muroiwa were relocated to Mbome Farm, where Eureka constructed modern rural homesteads, boreholes, sanitation facilities and livestock dip tanks.
The mine worked closely with government departments, traditional leaders, local authorities and the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe to ensure relocations were conducted transparently and respectfully.
Education Investment
Education has emerged as a major focus area. Eureka upgraded a satellite primary school into a fully-fledged primary school, providing classroom blocks, furniture and textbooks. The company is also sponsoring school fees and bursaries for underprivileged learners at four schools in Guruve and supports prize-giving and speech days.
Looking ahead, Eureka plans to construct a secondary school at Mbome in 2026, further strengthening access to education in the district.
Health and Sanitation Support
On the health front, Eureka is constructing and equipping a clinic, expected to be completed and handed over to Guruve Rural District Council by early next year. The company is also renovating and equipping Guruve District Hospital, including the maternity ward, and has donated blankets, sheets and pillows to improve patient care.
In addition, the mine has drilled numerous boreholes, installed sanitation facilities and rolled out solar power projects to improve water access and energy availability in surrounding communities.
Community-Guided Development
Eureka’s CSR projects are implemented through community and government-led committees, which meet quarterly to identify priority needs in areas such as education, health, sanitation and environmental management.
CSR Manager Tinago Tinago said the approach ensures that projects respond to real community needs rather than top-down decisions.
“Our initiatives are driven by the community itself, working together with government officials. This ensures sustainability and ownership,” he said.
Building a Sustainable Legacy
Beyond social investment, Eureka Gold Mine has maintained a strong safety record, recording over 1,000 days without a lost-time injury and zero fatalities since operations began.
As one of Zimbabwe’s top three corporate gold producers, Eureka continues to balance production growth with environmental stewardship and community development.
“Our focus is people, profit and the planet,” Banda said. “That is how we ensure mining contributes meaningfully to national and local development.”
With US$2.3 million already invested, Eureka Gold Mine says it remains committed to expanding its CSR footprint as operations grow, positioning itself as a responsible mining partner in Guruve and Mashonaland Central.
