Two Women Die From Lightning Strikes

In an unfortunate incident, a woman from Gweru was struck by lightning and died instantly on Sunday while working in the fields, while another woman who was pregnant met the same fate in her hut in Zvishavane.


In the Gweru incident, the deceased, Mildred Chinguwo was struck while working in a sweet potato field located near the local Bata Shoe company.


Midlands Provincial Police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende confirmed the incident to Great Dyke News 24 saying the 55 year old woman was with her husband in the field when the unfortunate incident happened.


“Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms that we are investigating a sudden death of a 55 year old female adult who was struck by lightning and died on the spot. The now deceased, Mildred Chinguwo was working in a field situated between Mkoba 11 and CSC. Investigations are underway”, said Assistant Inspector Mukwende.


He urged members of the public to avoid being in open spaces or being in contact with water in case of rains accompanied by thunder and lightning.
In the Zvishavane incident a pregnant woman in Chief Mazvihwa’s area was also struck to death by lightning.

Chief Mazvihwa confirmed the incident to Great Dyke News 24 saying, the woman named Auxillia Mugwagwa from Jimu village, Ward 16 was with her children in the hut when the lighting struck. He said the incident shocked the community.


“l was hurt, it was in the afternoon and it was raining”, said the chief.
Meanwhile, a decomposing body was found at Adveloreen along Buffalo Drive in Zvishavane. The body was dumped at a garbage area and was discovered by children who were playing at the place.

With cases of crime rising up in the festive season in Zvishavane, a man was also stabbed by a knife and later died at the district hospital yesterday after a misunderstanding with a fellow acquaintance over who was to be saved first at a local bar.


The perpetrator is said to be still at large.
