Mining authorities in the Midlands have clarified that it is the responsibility of the local authority to remove any miners who are operating illegally within the town boundaries. They highlighted that that mining activities within towns are prohibited and can lead to serious environmental and safety hazards.

Speaking to Great Dyke News Provincial Mining Director Contilda Chimasha, a representative from the Ministry of Mines, emphasized that the local council has a responsibility to take action in response to illegal mining activities and any gold rush.

She also said it is the town council’s duty to ensure that all mining activities are carried out in accordance with the law and that any illegal mining is stopped immediately.

Chimasha further stated that those found to be engaging in illegal mining in a town setting should be arrested and charged. She added that the town council should report the issue to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), who will have the authority to take appropriate action.

Chimasha also said it is important to note that the Ministry of Mines does not issue mining licenses for any activity within a town.
