The Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr. Douglas Mombeshora, has unveiled plans to procure additional cancer treatment machines and establish more cancer treatment centers across Zimbabwe. The announcement was made during a Post-Cabinet Briefing on Tuesday.
Currently, Zimbabwe has two cancer treatment centers located at Parirenyatwa Hospital and Mpilo Central Hospital. Dr. Mombeshora confirmed that the Parirenyatwa facility is fully operational, while Mpilo is functioning but awaiting funds to make its CT scan equipment fully operational.
“We’ve got plans to buy new cancer machines,” said Dr. Mombeshora. “We are working on adding more machines at Parirenyatwa and Mpilo hospitals, and we plan to establish new treatment centers to increase accessibility.”
The minister revealed that the government, with funding secured from Shumba Tetsu, has consulted specialists to prioritize the necessary equipment for these upgrades.
The expansion aims to address the growing burden of cancer in Zimbabwe, ensuring more patients receive timely and effective treatment. This initiative is expected to improve cancer care and reduce treatment waiting times.
Dr. Mombeshora emphasized the government’s commitment to making cancer treatment more accessible nationwide as part of its broader healthcare improvement strategy.
