In a bid to enhance service delivery, authorities in Zimbabwe’s capital, Harare, are making a fervent appeal to the government, residents, and businesses to settle outstanding debts owed to the local authority. The council reveals an alarming figure, stating that they are currently owed over half a trillion Zimbabwe dollars, specifically, ZW$580 billion.
Harare Mayor, Jacob Mafume, expressed concern over the escalating debt during a recent interview. Mafume emphasized the critical need for timely payments, highlighting the staggering amount of ZW$580 billion that the council is grappling with. The accumulation of this debt poses a significant obstacle to improving essential services for residents.
Contrarily, Precious Shumba from the Harare Residents Trust provided a different perspective, asserting that the council’s budget exceeds the financial capacity of the residents. Shumba’s commentary suggests a complex financial challenge, where the residents may be burdened by demands that surpass their financial means.
