Kwekwe Central MP Judith Tobaiwa has urged the Government to shut down Globe and Phoenix Mine and stop all gold mining activities, calling the site a “death trap” for young people.
Tobaiwa made the remarks at Amaveni Stadium during the funeral service for six individuals who died last Thursday when a mine shaft at Globe and Phoenix collapsed. The popular mining site is located just outside Kwekwe’s Central Business District (CBD).
The tragedy has renewed concerns about safety in the town, which rests on underground mining tunnels from decades-old operations. Recently, Globe and Phoenix Primary School was decommissioned after a classroom block collapsed into a tunnel, injuring students. Days later, a nearby house also caved in, raising alarm over the town’s precarious situation.
