Zambia’s President Fires Three Judges Amid Allegations of Judicial Misconduct.

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has dismissed three top judges he previously suspended over alleged misconduct, sparking accusations of political interference.

The judges – Annie Sitali, Mungeni Mulenga, and Palan Mulonda – had presided over a 2016 election petition Hichilema lost and allowed former President Edgar Lungu to run in 2021 despite serving two terms. Their removal follows the rejection of their appeal against a Judicial Complaints Commission (JCC) panel’s recommendation for suspension.

Hichilema’s office stated the move was in line with the constitution, but critics argue it undermines judicial independence. Lungu’s lawyer called it “executive overreach,” while analysts say the issue highlights flaws in the judge appointment process.

The decision has drawn mixed reactions as Zambia gears up for the 2026 elections, where Hichilema and Lungu are expected to face off again.
