M23 Rebels Threaten to March on Bukavu Amid Escalating DR Congo Conflict.

The M23 rebel group has warned of expanding its offensive to Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu province, citing worsening violence.

Spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka stated on X that if attacks on civilians continue, M23 will “eradicate the threat at its source.”

Since January, M23 has clashed with government forces, killing several peacekeepers, including South Africans. The rebels seized Goma in late January and installed de facto authorities.

The UN reports 2,900 deaths and warns M23 may advance toward Bukavu. The conflict, fueled by mineral disputes, has strained DR Congo-Rwanda relations, with Kinshasa accusing Kigali of backing M23—an allegation Rwanda denies.
