Artisanal mining-related violence has once again reared its ugly head in Mberengwa, this time with artisanal miners killing a colleague for allegedly stealing their cell-phones while they worked underground.
Mberengwa District Development Coordinator Nyede Ndeya said the deceased allegedly stole his colleagues’ mobile phones while they were working underground and they severely beat him up Tuesday night resulting in his death the following morning
The Zimbabwe Republic Police have arrested 907 illegal miners as part of “Operation Chikorokoza ngachipere, no to machete-wielding gangs” as pressure to crush machete gangs intensifies. The raids saw 740 arrested at Jumbo Mine, 139 in Shamva and 28 at Mazowe Bridge.
