The Midlands Province has joined the rest of the country in commemorating World Environment Day 2025, with renewed calls for collective action to combat plastic pollution and safeguard wetlands for future generations.

Speaking to mark the day, Midlands Provincial Environmental Education and Publicity Officer, Oswald Ndlovu, said this year’s commemorations are running under the national theme: “Uniting Against Plastic Pollution – Protecting Wetlands for Future Generations.”

He said the theme is timely and aligns with the upcoming 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) on environmental protection, which Zimbabwe will host in Victoria Falls from June 23 to July 12, 2025.

“As we commemorate World Environment Day, let’s work together in reducing plastic pollution by separating waste at the source and recovering materials for recycling,” Ndlovu said.

He urged communities, businesses, and individuals to avoid single-use plastics and instead adopt eco-friendly packaging solutions to reduce environmental harm.

World Environment Day is celebrated globally on June 5 each year, and in 2025 it continues to spotlight the urgent need to address pollution, protect biodiversity, and promote sustainable living practices.

In Zimbabwe, environmental authorities are also placing greater emphasis on wetland preservation, amid rising concerns about urban development and illegal waste dumping threatening critical ecosystems.
