Stakeholders in Zimbabwe’s mining sector have raised serious concerns over the reduced mining production caused by the El Niño-induced drought of 2023-2024. The prolonged dry spell has significantly impacted operations, particularly in gold and chrome mines, due to the scarcity of water essential for processing plants.

Payne F. Kupfuwa, CEO of the Young Miners Foundation, highlighted the severe challenges faced by the industry. He stressed the critical need for adequate water supplies to sustain mining activities.

“Water is indispensable in mining, especially in the processing of minerals like gold and chrome. The drought has severely hindered production due to water shortages,” Kupfuwa explained.

The drought has also driven up food prices, straining the budgets of mining companies. Funds initially earmarked for machinery and operational costs have been diverted to cover the increased cost of feeding miners. “Mining is labor-intensive, and ensuring adequate food supplies is crucial. The drought has made food prices exorbitant, increasing our overhead costs and hampering production,” Kupfuwa added.
