Nigeria, the country with the world’s highest malaria deaths, has launched its first malaria vaccine campaign. The R21/Matrix-M vaccine, approved by the World Health Organization (WHO), is being administered to children aged 5 to 15 months.

The roll-out began in Bayelsa and Kebbi, with plans to expand nationwide by next year. Health experts say the vaccine is 75% effective but recommend combining it with mosquito nets and insecticides for maximum protection.
Bayelsa’s Health Commissioner, Prof. Seiyefa Brisibe, highlighted efforts to promote the vaccine through local language campaigns. A mother, whose child was the first to receive the jab, called it a step toward protecting children.

Malaria remains a major challenge in Nigeria, accounting for 31% of global deaths in 2022. WHO’s Dr. Walter Mulombo expressed optimism that the vaccine, alongside preventive measures, will help reduce malaria’s burden in Nigeria and bring Africa closer to being malaria-free.

The government estimates malaria costs Nigeria $1.1 billion annually in lost productivity and healthcare expenses. Other African countries, including Ivory Coast and the DRC, have also started using the vaccine this year.
