In a proactive measure against the resurgence of polio, health experts are strongly advocating for the vaccination of children aged 0 to 10 years. Polio, a highly contagious viral infection with potential severe consequences, primarily impacts the nervous system and can result in paralysis, particularly in the limbs.

Dr. Wallace Hlambelo, speaking to Great Dyke News, emphasized the critical importance of vaccination in preventing the transmission of the poliovirus.

Once an individual contracts the virus, the available interventions are limited to the use of supportive devices such as wheelchairs and walking sticks.

Dr. Hlambelo urged communities to prioritize the vaccination of children against polio, stressing that with widespread immunization, the disease can be effectively managed and ultimately eradicated.

Highlighting the urgency of the situation, Health Deputy Minister Sleiman Kwidini recently announced the identification of a Circulating Poliovirus Variant in Zimbabwe.

In response to this, the Ministry of Health has initiated an Emergency Polio Response Vaccination campaign. This comprehensive initiative entails two rounds of national polio vaccination scheduled for February and March 2024, targeting all children below 10 years of age.
